Jon Katz, écrivain en panne d'inspiration, est au bout du rouleau. Son comportement a depuis longtemps fait fuir sa femme, partie s'installer chez sa soeur. L'auteur, qui s'enfonce dans sa déprime, ne répond même plus au téléphone. Un matin, sa vie est bouleversée quand un chenil lui fait parvenir, sans qu'il comprenne pourquoi, un chien de berger, victime de mauvais traitements. Malgré un départ difficile, Jon décide de garder le chien et quitte New York pour s'installer dans une ferme isolée, bien décidé à gagner l'affection de l'animal. Ce changement d'environnement amène peu à peu l'écrivain à se lier avec ses voisins. Pour son premier film, le scénariste George LaVoo adopte un ton très classique et offre à Jeff Bridges le rôle en or d'un écrivain brisé par la vie.
